Hi, I'm Sharon Birtell.

I am a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker in the state of Kansas. My formal education includes an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters Degree in Social Work from Washburn University. I have End of Life training and am a certified Tai Chi instructor. Over the course of my 13 years in the social work field, I have overseen social services departments, worked with clients in different phases of their life, and supervised both undergraduate and post-graduate level students. In addition, I have also provided social work in the corrections field.

In my 13 years of experience I have helped individuals with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar
  • Personality Disorders
  • Schizophrenia Spectrum
  • Trauma
  • Neurocognitive Disorder

Having grown up in rural Kansas outside of Topeka, my company, Birtell Counseling, looks to assist people in the state of Kansas that are experiencing challenges in navigating life's journey. My mission with each person I meet is to help them find their strength in life and and to give them the hope and future they need to find fulfillment.

While blessed with a husband and two sons, I also know not every day in life is perfect. At times, people experience challenges and need someone to walk with them through that. My father is over 90 years-old and is mentally and physically independent. But there are times he needs validation and support. I want my clients to know no matter their age or background it is ok at times to need psychosocial assistance. It isn't a sign of weakness to seek counseling or therapy, and my intention is to foster an environment of respect and acceptance in which a level of trust can be created.

In my practice, I focus on an individual, person-centered treatment through Cognitive-Behavior Therapy and Strength Perspective. This means I treat each individual as a singular person who is the expert on their own life. My job is to use my education, research, and experience to give them the tools for a successful life. They in turn can use those tools in their daily life, and find fulfillment in their own goal setting rather than having someone tell them what to do.

For more information on the types of therapy implemented, please visit the Counseling Services page. You can also call during regular business hours or e-mail me any time. I will respond as soon as I can. Currently I work in the community with clients as well as primary care physicians, insurance companies, places of worship, and a variety of other living environments. I look forward to working with each individual because a stronger individual makes a stronger community and a better place to live.
